Wandering Sounds

What happens when my hometown (B-More) and the collection of cities that served as the backdrop to my college years (Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News, Va Beach) connect on a musical level? The answer is musical magic entitled Sound Wandering.

Everyone knows that SE Virginia has had an extraordinary impact on HipHop. It's the birthplace of The Neptunes, Timbaland and Missy and the chosen residence of one, Teddy Riley. They have all done their part to drastically shape the sounds of the culture. But understand there's more to the Tidewater area.

At the beginning of the month, I was listening to the Funkadelic Freestyles radio show and Eddie and E Major were in the studio. I had never heard of them, but I was fortunate to tune in right when they were about to play some music from Eddie's upcoming Sound Wandering album.

I don't recall the names of the joints I heard, but I remember nodding my head as the music blasted from my laptop. I was intrigued, so I did some research. According to Eddie, some of his main influences are the great J Dilla (R.I.P.) and DJ Spinna. But there's more to his sound. Eddie grew up listening to the sounds of rock-n-roll on one end and samba, reggae and salsa on the other end. In addition, Eddie mixes his background as a musician in jazz, rock and HipHop groups into his production.

After connecting with Eddie through E Major, I was given the chance to check out the entire album. The album is ten tracks deep and is full of material that takes you back to the days of pure HipHop. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of different forms of HipHop, but it's always nice to find something that's new and fresh yet gives you a feel of nostalgia at the same time.

Sound Wandering features E Major, Cy Young and Kev Brown among others. Be sure to cop it from all of the major digital retailers (iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, etc.) on April 28, 2009. For now check out One Man Band featuring E Major.

"Cold as the cold in the winter" is a reference to a Biggie line.
