New Music: KingPen Slim - She Loves Me

As he mentioned when I reached out to him a couple months ago, KingPen Slim is back with new music. Instead of dropping one song, he took it back to the cassette single days and dropped an A-side/B-side-like one, two combo on us instead.

She Love Me features Slim talking through the ups and downs of relationships while Show Must Go On finds the D.C. native speaking on the same subject, only this time in the context of pursuing his dreams. Both joints were produced by Mark Henry, who happens to be on a tear right now if you haven't been paying attention.

KingPen Slim - Hold You Down

KingPen Slim drops the long-awaited video to his Marcus Canty-assisted single Hold You Down. Then Keep Going to get some insight on the storyline, embracing Domestic Violence Awareness month and what's next for the Uptown representer.

"I aint gon hold you back, I'ma hold you down."

Even though I missed the National Domestic Violence Month, KingPen Slim's words still ring true. Fellas, keep your hands to yourself. Walk away, smoke a blunt, take a shit. Whatever. Just do something else. It's zero-sum situation. Point. Blank. Period.

This might get me in trouble, but that goes for you too ladies. Some of yall purposely try to take advantage of the "a man should never hit a lady" rule. That's just as wrong in my humble opinion. Playing the, "so but blah, blah, blah" card isn't a good enough reason.

Kicks For Kids 2011

Every year like clockwork, the homie Ian "iCan" puts everything he has into organizing his annual Kicks For Kids event. This past December, Ian and Shoe City took it to another level by adding a concert to the event.

Headlined by MMG's Meek Mill, the concert also featured some of the DMV's most talented HipHop stars including, Uptown X.O., Pro'verb (w/ Lyriciss), Gods'Illa and KingPen Slim. Also gracing the stage was Black Alley, one of the most talented and diverse bands I've ever heard.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it out to the event. Luckily, Cool Kids Forever Films did. Check out the recap:

Shouts to everyone that organized this year's event. As I've said in the past, the work that goes into to making this event successful is the part that is typically overlooked.

The Indie Life: Second Edition

Just as the post title indicates, the second edition of The Indie Life Concert Series is here. Tonight's featured artist is none of other than Freeway, the bearded former Roc-A-Fella MC that gained his first national notoriety with a song stealing verse on Jay-Z's 1-900-Hustler.

Also hitting the stage will be the DMV's own, Black Cobain (The Board Administration, KingPen Slim (Beam Up) and SmCity (Twenty20).

Last month's kick off was dope. Don't believe me? See it for yourself.

This month's concert has no reason not to be equally as dope.

The Indie Life: Concert Series, [presented by Twenty20, Life Massive & Cool Kids Forever Films], is the creation of Hip Hop artist SmCity (URB Mag NEXT 100, SXSW performer, Owner of Twenty20 Music & Films). Being a well respected artist/entrepreneur based in the DC/MD/VA (DMV) area he realized that there needed to be a platform to showcase the indie talent in the correct light. His goal is to bring a nationally known headlining act to Washington, DC every month and pair them with some of the most decorated indie artist in the DMV.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

Stalley: B-More/DC Takeover

I've been sitting on some very dope information in regards to Stalley for a couple of weeks now. Before unleashing it, I wanted to let his new mixtape soak in and get some thoughts behind it. Now that I've done that, it's only right that I let you know that Stalley will be making his way to the metro next week.

First up on his tour through the region is the show in B-More on the 22nd. Setting the stage on fire before Stalley does his thing at The Ottobar will be Baltimore's own Greenspan and Kane Mayfield, both of whom have been featured on this site.

Cop your tickets here.

The follwing night Stalley takes his show south to DC at Liv alongside Greenspan, RAtheMC, Gods'Illa and KingPen Slim

I don't think you can lose either night. I personally will be at the DC show since I'll be checking out Theophilius London on Tuesday.

Less Than Zero

Representing the "V" in the equation, the area's own PHZ-Sicks is back with a mixtape that takes the listener down a path less traveled. Less Than Zero is the story of "Kristofer Williams" and his travels through life enduring various ups and downs in life, love and the music industry. According to Phz-Sicks, "I wanted to put the listener in the story so they could relate to what's going on in the mixtape and vibe with me."

Beam Up, Under Sound

If reading the title left you scrathing your head, then you're sleeping on my creative genius and need to step your game up. That ish is pretty damn clever.

Frequent riders of the graviti train (that's another one), should be real familiar with team Under Sound. The B-More homies have a great after work party poppin' off on Thursday evening.

But before Thursday rolls through, the super talented and connected, Candice Nicole, hit me with the buzz on where everyone in the D.M.V. needs to be tomorrow night.

If you've been riding around the area for the past couple of months and seen random people with "beam up" shirts on, but never figured out if it was a Trekie convention gone hood, then this one is for you. Tomorrow night, KingPen Slim will be debuting the video for his new single, Powder 4 da Babies. The song the first singe from his new mixtape The Beam Up and the video is directed by D.C.'s own Tabi Bonney. If you've witnessed the creative eye of Tabi in his videos, then you know to expect an ill visual for the Kingpen of the Inkpen new joint.

If you're in the D.C. metro and looking for a place to get it in on Hump Day eve, then you need to be at Lotus Lounge tomorrow night.

Then on Thursday, roll through Fletcher's to catch the double feature release of Under Sound's Make It and Paper Runnin'.

Also, be on the lookout for E Major's The Major Major Mixtape dropping real soon.
